Tossa de Mar is a snug seaside resort on the Costa Brava located in the north east of Spain on the Mediterranean Sea approximately 80 kilometres away from Barcelona. It is perhaps a little less well known than neighbour Lloret de Mar, but is just an as popular sun destination. With its wonderful beaches, long warm summers and old centre it is a very suitable place for a relaxing holiday with the family. Tossa used to be a fishing village, but the last fifty years it has transformed into a nice holiday spot. It is beautifully located on the rough coast line with steep rocks and a dense cultivation, it has an idyllic surrounding. The city is also known as “the pearl of the Costa Brava”, and rightly so.

Of course you can also come here for the sun and beach. Tossa de Mar has 3 nice beaches, Platja Gran in the centre, in the north you have the bay of Platja del Mar Menuda and surrounded by high rocks you have El Codolar, a small beach that is especially popular with under water sportsmen and woman. If you like them, you are in the right place in Tossa de Mar. You can, for example, go snorkelling, water skiing, water cycling, surfing, the possibilities are enormous. For the small people there is a playground on the beach. Because Tossa doesn´t have its own harbour, there are numerous sport and fishing boats anchored in the sheltered bay that are pulled up on the beach at night. When there doesn’t seem to be an end coming to the long summer beach days, it is a very nice show to see.
Tossa also has a lot to offer to culture lovers. In the medieval inner city, Vila Vella, you can wander around small streets and you can admire the city walls and watch towers from the 12th century. The old castle towers out above Tossa and offers a fantastic view of the beach and the Mediterranean Sea. In the twenties and thirties a lot of artists from Europe were attracted to the special atmosphere. Chagall often spent his summers here, his work “The Violin Player” hangs in the museum of Tossa de Mar, which is definitely worth visiting. This museum is located in the new part of Tossa that stretches out along the beach, Villa Nova. It is also nice to take a look in the light house. A beautiful building, you can get something to eat and drink here and enjoy the lovely view of the coast line.
In the small streets of the old centre you will find many shops. You will definitely be successful in finding a nice souvenir as a memory of a wonderful holiday on the Costa Brava. Every Thursday there is a market in Tossa, that you mustn’t miss. You can have something to drink or eat in one of the many bars and restaurants. Tossa has only one club, but you are close to Lloret for more nightly pleasure.
Replace a beach day with a nice, active trip. There is a lot to do in the surroundings. From Platja Gran you can, for example, take the ferry to Lloret de Mar and Blanes. You can also do some good shopping or go out here. From the same beach you can make a boat trip of approximately an hour along the coast. You can navigate into one of the caves. In the green surroundings you can go for nice bike rides or walks and with an hours’ drive you can find the World city of Barcelona. Marineland, a dolfinarium with water park beside it, lies only a half hour away, which is a nice trip for the entire family.
