Altea: a beautiful town to visit on the Costa Blanca

Altea, the most beautiful town on the Costa Blanca

It’s not for nothing that Altea has been named the most beautiful town on the Costa Blanca. Located on a hill, Altea gazes down upon the large bay at its feet. Altea is situated between Benidorm and Calpe, and owes its beauty to its picturesque old town, overlooked by the parish church of Nuestra Senora del Consuelo with its beautiful blue-and-white tiled dome. It was after the 50s that Altea came to be seen as a peaceful and pleasant destination among tourists. The Mediterranean climate, a coastline spanning 6km with alternating cliffs, pebble beaches and the picturesque “white” town centre make Altea a lovely seaside resort.

Altea, an authentic, picturesque old town crowned with blue church domes.

City of Altea. Note the blue church dome with its geometric shapes.

The authentic and picturesque town centre of Altea was built on a hill at the foot of Bernia mountain. By following the steep and narrow paved streets and the steps past the whitewashed houses, the different viewpoints and the round squares, you will reach the summit of Altea, where you will find the beautiful parish church with its blue dome. From here you have a splendid panoramic view of the Altea coast and its surrounding area. In the centre of town, you can admire the balconies adorned with flowers, the beautiful shops, bars and the remarkably elegant and comfortable restaurants. Nearly every restaurant has its own character and offers you a unique menu.

Altea, home port for many artists

Altea combines a village of artists with a modern seaside resort in a typically Spanish way. The astonishing little coves, beaches and whitewashed houses are the characteristic setting of this charming destination. It is therefore no surprise that Altea has always been a popular haven for many artists. At nightfall in summer, they come and set up under the busy boulevard’s palm trees to show their works. Their galleries and craft shops are located in the alleys of the old town. Every evening in Altea’s main square there is an art market. Sit on a terrace and listen to blues and soft jazz music. In addition to numerous galleries, Altea also has a library, music groups and the Altea Palace, where exhibitions, concerts, ballet, opera and theatre performances take place.

Altea: beautiful beaches, rocky bays and hidden coves.

Altea’s varied landscape is surprising. All along the coast there are high cliffs and magnificent beaches.

Altea has a modern marina and about six kilometres of coastline, where pebbled beaches alternate with small boating harbours and rocky bays. Everywhere, you will find various water sports on offer. The Playa de la Rode is located in the old town centre. On the south side you have the main beach, Playa de Cap Blanc, which extends as far as Albir beach. On the north side you have the pebbled Cap Negret beach. At the end of this beach there is the small Cala de Soia cave, where you can walk on black pebbles. On the southern border of Altea there is Playa de l’Olla, where you can find even more coves: la Barretta, la Solsida and la Galera.

Altea maintains its traditions: folklore and culture

  • – Every Tuesday, the weekly market is the biggest market on the Costa Blanca. Here you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables, clothes, furniture, toys and household items.
  • – In September the annual fireworks festival “Moros y Cristianos” takes place. With its spectacular fireworks, Altea remembers the centuries of fighting by the Christians against Moorish domination.
  • – Those who like concerts will be in their element on Altea’s Plaça de l’Agla, where different concerts are held. Enjoying a good glass of wine and some jazz during a summer evening is one of the seven pleasures of a stay in Altea.
  • – On New Year’s Eve, the whole town gathers in the main square to listen to the parish church bell. Eating a grape at every chime is a Spanish tradition.

There is also a nine-hole golf course in Altea.

Altea is also an attractive holiday destination for golf lovers. At the foot of the Bernia mountain is one of the 12 golf clubs of the province of Alicante. The Don Cayo golf club has a magnificent nine-hole golf course, surrounded by a Mediterranean forest, and offers a beautiful view of the azure-blue sea of Altea.
