The base is square in shape and it turns to octagon at higher levels. There are small towers at each corner of the octagon. The tower is adorned with blind arches, coats of arms and cornices. At present Salamanca Provincial Government is housed in this place. There is a pharmaceutical exhibition being conducted on a permanent basis. In addition art exhibitions are held periodically. Salina Palace &#x2013; is a 16th century palace of Plateresque period built as per Renaissance style. This was designed by the architect Gil de Honta&#xF1;&#xF3;n and Rodrigo de Mess&#xED;a commissioned it. This was earlier a place for storing salt and its name came from it. The courtyard inside is irregular in shape and is adorned with figures that are twisted. This is used as Salamanca's Provincial Council&#x2019;s seat for the moment. Salamanca University &#x2013; is a 13th century university of Plateresque period. This university is well known for teaching and learning throughout the world. This was founded in 1218. Its base is square and has a courtyard at the center with galleries surrounding it. Las &#xDA;rsulas Convent &#x2013; is a 16th century convent built as per Gothic style and was founded during the 16th century by Alonso de Fonseca, the archbishop. There is a nave that is covered with ribbed vaults as well as a polygonal apse. The interior is full of religious art &#x2013; Don Alfonso de Fonseca&#x2019;s tomb, Archbishop Francisco Rivas&#x2019;s butler&#x2019;s tomb. Roman Bridge &#x2013; is a first century bridge having 26 arches that span over the Tormes River.&#xA0; According to some historians this bridge was constructed by Marcus Ulpius Traianus in the first century A.D. It crosses the river where it is very broad and the subsoil under the bridge is rocky. The length of the bridge is 176 M and it has a width of 3.7 M. Salamanca Plaza Mayor Square &#x2013; is an 18th century square built in Baroque style and the architect was Alberto Churriguera. The City Hall is situated on the northern side; this building is a Baroque and is provided with five arches made from granite. It has been decorated with a number of medallions &#x2013; Charles I, Ferdinand VI, Alfonso XI, St. Theresa and Cervantes. The buildings have 3 storey high facades and have balustrades and semicircular arches. Other monuments in this place are &#x2013; 18th century Anaya Palace, 17th century La Clerec&#xED;a building, 13th century San Esteban Church and Monastery, 12th century San Mart&#xED;n Church, 12th century San Marcos Church, 17th century La Pur&#xED;sima Church, etc.</description></oembed>
