Burgos had a turbulent political past and almost always it was in the focus of the historical events.\u00a0In addition, it is on the way to the <strong>pilgrim city of Santiago de la Kompostela<\/strong>. Furthermore, Burgos was the capital of the Kingdom of Castile for 500 years, and during the Spanish civil war it was a stronghold of General Franco. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>City Attractions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the City of Burgos you can experience the spirit of the middle ages and see the buildings from that period.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cathedral de Burgos <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The center of Burgos is perfectly preserved, with many old churches and monasteries. However, the most impressive church is Cathedral de Burgos. <strong>It is a Gothic Cathedral, built from 13\u00a0till 15\u00a0century. <\/strong>The cathedral is famous for its size (the third largest in Spain). Above all, it is also famous since it is on the UNESCO world heritage list. However, the large rosette on the main fa\u00e7ade is very impressive, as well as the Royal gate, which was restored in the 18th\u00a0century.\u00a0The cathedral was buried by Castilian military commander and diplomat El Cid, who fought in Spain against the Moors.\u00a0<strong>Entrance to the cathedral is 5 \u20ac. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Las Huelgas <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The monastery\u00a0Las Huelgas\u00a0is only 2 km away from the city center. It was built in 1180.\u00a0The construction of the monastery is in Pre-Gothic style. Its interior is very impressive, with colossal pillars that support the magnificent dome.\u00a0Monastery of Las Huelgas enjoyed the benefits of the government until 14th century. Many members of the royal family got married in this monastery.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cartuja de Miraflores <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cartuja de Miraflores\u00a0&#8211; monastery of Carthusian order of Roman Catholic Church is 4 km away from the city.\u00a0The main relic is a wooden statue of St. Bruno, founder of the Carthusian Order of the monastery. Above all, there is a mausoleum, in which they buried the king Juan II de Castilla (John II of Castile &#8211; 1405-1454) and his wife Isabel de Portugal (Isabella of Portugal).\u00a0The monument was partially damaged during the War for Independence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dining<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In addition to medieval buildings, Burgos also has good restaurants.<\/p>\n<p>The whole area of Castilla y Leon is known for their fresh cheese\u00a0Queso de Burgos, which is traditionally made from sheep\u2019s milk.\u00a0However, local inhabitants are also very proud of their version of blood pudding, which they call morcilla. Famous architects and painters of the time worked on the monastery construction.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to arrive in Burgos<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>You can arrive in Burgos by bus or train. <\/strong>The city has international bus and railway stations. It houses an airport with regular flights available to Barcelona, Paris and Palma de Mallorca.<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\nWith the many efforts Burgos has embarked on to maintain mobility<\/strong>, in 2007 the city won the principal award in Europe connected with mobility. Now they are trying to make the main hub of the city free from any cars and to make public transport 100% clean.
