The city was founded in 955 by the Phoenicians. However, during the reign of Abd al-Rahman III, it became the main port of his Caliphate.\u00a0<strong>Later it was occupied by the Carthaginians, Romans, and Moors, before the Christian army conquered this place in the 15\u00a0century. <\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tourism<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\nAlmeria is a city of the sun, tall palm trees, long beaches, national parks, entertainment and sports. <\/strong>It is one of the warmest and sunniest areas in Europe. With over three thousand hours of sunshine a year it is providing ideal conditions for relaxation.\u00a0This climate is a real boom to the inhabitants of Almeria. However they use it in the best possible way- to attract tourist to this lovely seaside resort.\u00a0The most frequent guests of the resort are the Germans and English.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Economy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In addition to tourism, Almeria has also developed its economy in all other directions. So it has a lot of greenhouses, and lately it has started production of fruits and vegetables, mainly for export.<\/p>\n<p>Almeria is alive, modern commercial center with a large harbor, marina and sport boats for sport fishing.\u00a0<strong>In its big port you can find many ferry boats, which go to different North African countries.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>An endless beach <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Coast offers a diverse selection of beaches. The place is well known for its tall palm trees, which rise along the coastline and long beaches with gray sand.\u00a0In Avenue Cabo de Gata, in the center of town, is placed a big city beach.\u00a0This a perfect place for swimmers, who can enjoy here in the beautiful color of the sea<strong>.\u00a0There is also famous Playa Nueva Almeria. <\/strong>This beach offers an opportunity to spend a day in a pleasant surfing, and who had never tried it, can take lessons and experience the incredible feeling.<strong> This avenue along the sea is dominated by a large promenade with palm trees. <\/strong>The promenade is crossed paved with white and red stones. It offers a fantastic view of the sea, which leaves no one indifferent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Almeria\u2019s beaches offer relaxation in playing volleyball or soccer in the sand.<\/strong> However, for those who love to explore, sandy beaches of La Garofi are right place. Look for the \u201eSol de Portocarrero\u201d, a huge sun, engraved on the stone facade of this cathedral, symbolizing the privileged climate of Almeria. A relic of the past of the industrial port is Cables Ingles, a cable used for loading\u00a0 ore, and especially used for the tin mines here.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alcazaba, dominating the town<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Do not miss visiting <strong>Alcazaba <\/strong>(arabian castle) that dominates the town with its castellated walls and towers. Built in 955 to control the Muslim port from Spain, it fell to the armies of the Catholic Monarchs in 1490.<\/p>\n<p>Today only a small number of relics have survived inside the walls, but walk through its three premises, full of aromatic plants, fountains and water channels. Climb up to \u201eTorre de Polvora\u201d from the back of the castle and admire \u201e<strong>Muralla de la Hoya<\/strong>\u201d, a fortified wall deep in the valley that can be seen from the hill St. Christopher, placed in front of it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A peaceful holiday in Almeria<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dominating the town from the hill\u2019s<strong> height, Alcazaba, or the castle, <\/strong>retains echoes of the past and the present of the Moorish in Almeria.
