La Palma is the most western island in the Canary Islands.\u00a0La Palma is a small island, but in all other respects, it deserves only superlatives. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>National Park<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the central part is placed the national park, dominated by gigantic <strong>volcanic Caldera de Taburiente throat<\/strong>. Northern periphery of the crater rises up to 2433m and it is the highest point of the island.\u00a0There is an astrophysical observatory which is not open for the public.<\/p>\n<p><strong>National Park <\/strong>was formed in a giant explosion 400 000 years ago.\u00a0The volume of volcanic throat is 28 km, the maximum diameter is more than 9 km. Ecstatic fans believe that the size of the area from which the volcano rises is the highest peak in the world.\u00a0The area is extremely attractive to botanists, geologists, zoologists and ordinary tourists as well.<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\nLandscape<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nIn the east, west and north of the country, gorges descend toward the sea, while in the south there are smaller reefs.\u00a0Another <strong>striking feature of La Palma<\/strong> is its dominant green face.\u00a0Dell, which falls steeply to the sea, is covered by dense forests of pine, myrtle and laurel.\u00a0There are luxurious banana plantations but people also grow avocados and tobacco.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Coastline<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nThe coast is rough with rocky walls and abrupt fall towards the sea and<strong> small beaches<\/strong> which are covered with fine black volcanic sand.\u00a0However, because of the configuration of the ground there are no large tourist facilities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tourist Attractions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The island has quite a few things worth seeing. However, you can visit the Ayuntamiento, in <strong>Santa Cruz<\/strong>. This is the former palace of cardinals from the mid 16th\u00a0century.\u00a0Today, it is the town hall. Furthermore, it is one of historic buildings in the triangle formed by the<strong> Plaza de Espa\u00f1a and Calle O&#8217;Daly<\/strong>.\u00a0At the market on the edge of the Plaza de la Almeda is placed the ship. It is a concrete replica of the Columbus ship, the \u201c<strong>Santa Mar\u00eda<\/strong>\u201d in natural size facing the sea.\u00a0There is a regulated <strong>maritime museum<\/strong> which is not anything special, but it is interesting. You can walk through two floors where exhibits are displayed and then get on board the ship and in front of you there will suddenly be a sea view.<\/p>\n<p>Barlovento is a<strong> major agricultural city<\/strong> in the northeast of the island. Its residents are proud of the church which was built in the 17th century. Approximately 1 km west from Barloventa is the Laguna de Barlovento. It is officially the largest artificial lake on the island.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The capital city of Palma de Majorca<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The city of Palma was founded by Romans and is located at the bottom of a large bay that extends deep in the south of the island.\u00a0<strong>The city was surrounded by fortifications which have not been fully preserved. <\/strong>You can find many old buildings in the center of the city towards the coast.<!--more--> The old part of the town has narrow winding streets and there are palaces from the XVI and XVII centuries.\u00a0The city has many historical sites such as the cathedral, the church of San Francisco, Gothic monastery, Lona, Bellver Castle, etc.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gothic Cathedral<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>The building of this cathedral started in the XII century and it was completed early in the eighteenth century (some additions were made in the nineteenth century).\u00a0<strong>It is located on an area of 7,000 square meters<\/strong> and consists of three large wings.\u00a0<strong>La Seu is a typical Gothic sacral building. <\/strong>Portal is in the Renaissance style.<\/p>\n<p>The South facade with its &#8220;counterfort&#8221; gives the odd image when the city is approached from the open sea.\u00a0Inside are placed the Royal Chapel and two chapels in each of the outer wings and the Cathedral Museum.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Palacio de la Almudaina <\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>Jaime II king built his palace on the former Alcazar in the fourteenth century.\u00a0It consisted of a square building with four towers.\u00a0Later it was rebuilt, so the <strong>Royal Chapel was added in the western part in the Gothic style<\/strong>, now known as the Chapel of Santa Ana or\u00a0Queen&#8217;s palace.<\/p>\n<p>Today the palace Almudaina is open to visitors and it is also turned into a museum.Furthermore there is the famous Grand Hotel.\u00a0This is one of the first representatives of the so-called Modern Catalan style.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Two monasteries <\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Palma had two important monasteries. <\/strong>First there was the Dominican monastery that was the center of &#8220;sacred institution&#8221;. It does not exist anymore.
