{"id":21769,"date":"2010-08-10T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-08-10T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.clubvillamar.com\/blog\/uncategorized\/minorca-2\/"},"modified":"2010-08-10T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2010-08-10T00:00:00","slug":"minorca-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.clubvillamar.com\/blog\/spain\/minorca-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Minorca"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>About the island<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Minorca is the second largest <strong>island in the Balearic archipelago.<\/strong> It is located in the Mediterranean Sea and belongs to Spain.\u00a0Minorca covers an area of about 690 sq.km.\u00a0<!--more-->Anyone who visits this island will be surprised by the variety of landscapes and beautiful sceneries.\u00a0The Romans named this island.\u00a0The translation of the name means &#8220;small\u201d since it was necessary to distinguish it from the nearby larger island-Majorca.\u00a0Minorca is often called<strong> &#8220;Green Island<\/strong>&#8221; because it has very lush vegetation due to its high humidity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>History<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nHistory of the island dates back to the 3rd\u00a0century BC. The first inhabitants were immigrants from southern France.\u00a0In the 2nd century BC there were hunters and gatherers of fruit.\u00a0The evidence of that is the building without the defensive character. In 123 BC, the <strong>island was conquered by Cecillius Quintus Metellus<\/strong>, the ruler of the Roman Empire.\u00a0Metellus actually gave the name to this island.\u00a0In 427 BC, it became part of the North African kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>However, <strong>Minorca today has influences of various conquerors<\/strong> such as the Vandals, Arabs, Catalans, Turks, English, French and Spanish.\u00a0The traces can be found in the architecture, names of towns and villages, gastronomy and local way of life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Biosphere Reserve<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In1993, UNESCO World Heritage put the island in their list as unique biosphere reserve.<strong> Minorca was declared Biosphere Reserve<\/strong> due to its rich past. Here you will find the oldest known Talaioti building.\u00a0These objects date from 1,500 BC and even today, they are in good condition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tourist Attractions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Among the best preserved megaliths is Torralba d&#8217;en Salord.\u00a0This megalith is 2 meters high and weighs 25 tons.\u00a0You can also visit other megaliths such as Torellonet Vell Torre d&#8217;en Gaumes, Talat d&#8217;en Dalt, Trepuco, Torelli, Curnia and many more.<\/p>\n<p>Another attraction is the <strong>mountain Monte Toro<\/strong>.\u00a0It is dedicated to the patron saint of the island.\u00a0There are a few tourist attractions around the city such as Mahon, Ciutadella, Dragons Cave, Parc Natural de s&#8217;Albufera des Grau and Castle of Santa Agueda.<\/p>\n<p>Minorca is also called<strong> &#8220;the windy island&#8221;.<\/strong> There is a legend which says that the winds of Minorca change people\u2019s personality.\u00a0Perhaps this is one of the reasons why tourists always come back to Minorca.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Beaches<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The longest beach on the island is the Son Bou.\u00a0Minorca is somehow separate and distinct from the other islands.\u00a0There are many beaches and bays.\u00a0On the south coast there are <strong>beautiful beaches<\/strong> surrounded by pine forests and lush vegetation.\u00a0North Coast (La Tramuntana) is steeper and rocky, but it has exceptional beauty.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Minorca is the second largest island in the Balearic archipelago.
