Overview of <\/strong>Calpe<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Calpe (or Calp) is a municipality in the Spanish province of Alicante in the Community of Valencia<\/strong><\/a>. It is located about 12 miles north of Benidorm<\/strong><\/a>, one of the most famous seaside resorts in Europe. It covers an area of about 15 square miles and has a population of almost 20,000 people. Calpe is located on the beautiful Costa Blanca<\/strong><\/a> (Spanish for ‘white coast’), which is known for its white sandy beaches and rugged coves. Calpe is a popular destination, but it is not as crowded as places like Benidorm or Alicante<\/strong><\/a>. The Spanish call the city Calpe, but it is called Calp in Valencian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Spanish town of Calpe is the perfect place to enjoy sun, sea and sand<\/strong><\/a>! There are two beautiful, wide sandy beaches either side of the Pe\u00f1\u00f3n de Ifach rock formation, Playa Arenal (to the south) and Playa La Fossa (to the north). These are both wonderful, clean beaches with shallow water<\/strong> and perfect for the whole family. A charming, well-kept beach promenade runs along the entire beachfront and boasts a number of bars, restaurants and shops. Calpe has much more to offer than just beautiful beaches. Located on a hill is the old town, which is definitely worth a visit. Here, the narrow, cobbled streets and steps lead you around beautiful churches, painted houses, museums, typical Spanish bodegas and international caf\u00e9s. A particular highlight is the Carrer de Puchal, a street of traditional fishermen’s houses. In the past, Calpe used to be surrounded by walls, and a watchtower can still be found in the old town. Here, you will also find old cannons retrieved from the sea and the remains of an ancient Roman salt factory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The historic centre<\/strong> is not big – it consists of about 20 streets and a few squares – but it is definitely visiting. 1. The Pe\u00f1\u00f3n de Ifach<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As we\u2019ve said before, a visit to Calpe would not be complete without having seen the Pe\u00f1\u00f3n de Ifach. Many holidaymakers travel here specifically to see this volcanic rock formation! It\u2019s also part of a nature reserve full of flora and fauna. The hike to the top takes about 2.5 hours and the view is breath-taking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Las Salinas salt lake and nature reserve<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Do you feel like taking a relaxing walk through a nature reserve? Then the Las Salinas should definitely be on your itinerary. Salt has been collected in the lagoon here for centuries, and until relatively recently, it was a very important source of income for the town. But this area is more than just a salt mine. In this beautiful nature reserve, you can spot a range of different species of birds, sea creatures and animals which have made Las Salinas their home. Take a trip back in time at the old granary, Torre Mol\u00ed del Morello<\/strong>. The construction of the mill dates back to the middle of the 19th century, and it was used for grinding grain. The Costa Blanca was once home to many mills, but Torre Mol\u00ed del Morell\u00f3 is the only one of its kind that has survived!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Torre\u00f3 de la Pe\u00e7a<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Another must-see tower when visiting Calpe is the Torre\u00f3 de la Pe\u00e7a<\/strong>. During the 15th century, the tower provided protection from attacks by North African pirates. Today, you can visit the remains, which are in very good condition, the tower and walls having been completely restored in 1981.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. The impressive Fuents de Algar waterfalls<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

T<\/strong>he waterfalls of Algar<\/strong> are a very popular Costa Blanca attraction! Fuents de Algar belong to a protected national park and the waterfalls form part of a spectacular route along the river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
