Antequera, Spain – The Place to Be

If you want to have a history journey for the past 5,000 years, you should see this ancient town located in Andalucia and see the remnants of the Bronze Age life. Geographically, Antequera is situated in the Malaga province at the heart of Andalucia offering historic buildings and facades of more than 55 sites. A visit to Antequera also offers a sight of the rich agriculture industry supported by the irrigation of the Guadalhorce River. Within the area, you will see a big and impressive crag of an 80-meter high limestone called the La Peña de los Enmorados, referring to the impossible relationship of a Moorish girl and a young Christian. Your historic tour can be highlighted with a visit to the Dolmens on the western side. See the different monuments reflecting the megalithic sites characterized by the big blocks of stone for passages which were normally used for rituals in the early times. Also, visit the Cueva de la Menga and see the excavation of the 19th century where hundreds of inner chamber skeletons were found.

You can visit the Tholos of El Romeral and see the amazing dry stone masonry structure. This is a truly impressive structure as it is covered with 11 slabs.

See the magnificent churches in the town reflecting the high importance given by the Antequeran people to faith and religion. The churches that deserve a visit are the Church of Santa Maria, San Sebastian, Los Remedios, Madre de Dios and Belen among others.
