Attractive Frigiliana Holidays

Frigiliana may be a tiny quaint Spanish village 5 kilometers away from Nerja town but it offers a range of delightful attractions that are historical and charming. This is an ideal tourist spot, especially for a day’s exploration.

Frigiliana is at the foothills of the Almijara mountain, reachable from Malaga airport in an hour. It has been voted as Malaga’s prettiest town with its spectacular mountainous landscape and lush valley flowing down to the Mediterranean Sea.

Village Overview

This quaint little village delights all visitors with its cobbled streets of white washed homes lining its sides with seasonal colorful flowers. Frigiliana may have only 2,000 residents but it has lots of bars, shops and eateries to cater to the locals and tourists with delightful tapas and local cuisine at affordable prices. There are a variety of interesting purchases such as rugs, textiles, tiles, wines, pottery, ceramics and the like.

Frigiliana is one place which must be explored on foot to capture its natural beauty of mountains and valleys, waterfalls and rivers.

Historical Attractions

Any history fan will not be disappointed at Frigiliana with its steep history; it holds many fantastic archaeological items that are as old as 3,000 BC. Its culture has been shaped by the Roman, Arab and Phoenician occupations, with the Arabs leaving the greatest impact as seen from the many Moorish architectural designs in the village.

An important historical event at Frigiliana was the battle between the Arabs and the local Moriscos in 1569 where Nerja led the Christian army to victory at the Rock of Frigiliana, which is now instituted by 12 ceramic plaques at various street corners in the village. The tourists will get a good feel of the Moorish influence as they stroll through the town’s cobbled roads passing by Moorish architectures that are very well preserved in Andalucia.

This quaint village also boasts of a 17th century church, the Saint Anthony Church of Padua which underwent restoration in 1976. It dons the impressive Renaissance style with many original frescoes and well maintained high quality old paintings. Information about the beautiful architectural building can be found on a plaque at the entrance.

There is also an interesting 1767 Granary as well as an ancient Renaissance Palace built in the same century which has been converted into a factory producing molasses.

Festivals in Frigiliana

Spain is renowned for its many festivities in all its towns and Frigiliana is no exception; there are many celebrations which turn this sleepy hollow into a hive of activity with the most famous being the local bull run. The attractive climate with a moderate 18 degrees centigrade encourages many to flock to Frigiliana from all around, even in the winter as the temperature is mild and pleasant.

There is no doubt about Frigiliana taking the top place in 1982 for being the most beautified tourist spot from the country’s tourism ministry.
