Holidays In Santiago De Compostela

A spectacular holiday destination is Santiago de Compostela. The city is renowned for being the perfect place for tourists who are interested in spending their holiday visiting ancient sites and finding out details about the history and the cultural, artistic and architectural heritage of Spain. There are thousands of monuments to visit in Santiago, so prepare yourself with a lot of energy and thirst for knowledge, because you will need it!

First of all, visit the Obradoiro Square. The entire square looks like an open air museum, and is a beautiful representative of the history of the city and also the entire country. The Cathedral, situated in the center of the square, was built in 1075 during a flourishing period of the city and this grandeur is still visible today.

Right in front of the Cathedral stands the Gelmirez Palace, which is an exquisite example of Romanesque architecture. For those who are attracted by the neoclassical style dating back to the 18th century, the Rajoy Palace is the right place for them. The Fonseca and San Jeronimo Monasteries, both dating back to the 15th century  as well as the 19th century fountain known as the Caballos Fountain, situated exactly in the centre of the square, are some other  gorgeous monuments to visit.

Other important attractions

The Obradoiro Square is not the only attraction of Santiago de Compostela. The  beautiful Platerias Square is a magnet for tourists, who are amazed by the beauty of the artefacts made from silver, all of them handmade and available in the numerous crafts shops that are all over the square. Another interesting spot in the square is the 11th century monastery, one of the oldest monuments in the city.

The Quintana Square is representative of the Baroque style, and most of the monuments located here display wonderful Baroque elements. The Azabacheria Square displays a very unique and special architectural style – the Barroco Compostelana.

It is only here that you can see this rare and fabulous architectural style, so try to put it on your list, because it is of great importance to the city and the country. The University is another interesting destination in the city, a place with very picturesque streets, perfect for romantic walks.  There is a little bit of everything in Santiago de Compostela, so I assure you that your holiday will be a wonderful one.
