Interesting Museums In Alicante

Founded in 1932, the Provincial Archaeology Museum was originally hosted by the basement of a building in Alicante; few knew about its existence but due to the fact that it displayed important objects found in the archaeological sites in Alicante El Campello and even Torremanzanas, a decision was taken so that the museum was moved to a larger and more spacious building that used to belong to the San Juan Hospital.

The museum offers tourists the possibility to see objects dating back to the Paleolithic Age and it also displays some of great importance for the modern age; this is the reason why the museum is known as being among the most important ones of its kind in Spain.

The Capa Collection

This famous collection is displayed along the spacious halls of the popular Santa Barbara Castle. The collection is actually the largest containing Spanish contemporary sculptures in the world. Starting with the late 19th century and finishing with the 20th century, the collection contains all the important sculptures that attracted the attention and interest of Eduardo Capa.

The collector decided to grant it to the city, so the collection was inaugurated in 1998. You should visit the collection as it contains works of the greatest Spanish sculptors as well as a few belonging to some of the most important foreign sculptors.

The Garrigos Wells

The ancient wells excavated in the rock of the Benacantil Mountain contain more than 800,000 liters of water and are believed to date back to the age when the Arabs ruled over big parts of Spain. Restored in the 19th century, the wells contain hundreds of objects such as vases, jugs or bottles used by the inhabitants of Alicante throughout the centuries with the purpose of storing the water.

The Asegurada Museum

The exquisite art collection at the Asegurada Museum is one of the most important in Spain. Donated by Eusebio Sempere in 1977, the collection contains three departments: the Figurative Works, the Geometries and the Abstract Works. You will see beautiful graphic works, sculptures and even paintings, so try not to miss it!

The Nativity Museum

The beautiful Old Quarter of Alicante hosts the original Nativity Museum, famous for containing a great collection of scenes that show the birth of Jesus or different episodes lived by Him during his life. You should visit it as there aren’t too many similar museums in the world.
