Matalascañas

Overview

Matalascanas is located in Almonte municipality and borders Mazagon, Donana National Park and the Atlantic Ocean. This town is in the eastern extreme of Huelva. This is an ideal tourist locality in Andalusia as well as Spain and lots of tourists come to this place in summer.

One of the most attractive monuments in this place is the Tower – Higuera which is a guard tower existing in this town since the 17th century; in addition this town has lots of white sand and golden beaches.

History

The Matalascañas beach is in a privileged and unique environment. During the initial period of the second millennium, it was popular for pirates as well as Berebere. In order to avoid any attacks on the coast, the Aragon Crown built guard towers in the 16th century along the coast and these towers still exist.

Climate

The climate here is pleasant and you can enjoy the sun for 3200 hours in a year.

Art and Culture

1.The Doñana Natural and National Park – has a natural spread of about 507,000 hectares and is the ecosystem’s mosaic.
2.Matalascañas beach – is situated between the Doñana Park and the Atlantic Ocean and is the main center of tourism in Huelva.
3.The rock – in Matalascañas is nothing but an old watch tower or beacon that dominates the Torre de la Higuera beach.
4.Almenara Tower – is a modern construction that is used as the Center for interpreting the Coastline.
5.Museum of the Marine World – was designed by the architects Ortiz and Cruz in the form of a sand dune.

Cuisine

Seafood such as white shrimp and king prawns are popular in a great dish. Other items are – vegetables, meats and olive oil. Cured ham made from pigs that are fed with acorns is most popular.

Sports and Entertainment

This is a beach town that has good tourist infrastructure. The beaches here have fine sands and are not spoilt; they are surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and Donana.

Some of the sports that are being played on the beaches are – basket ball, beach soccer, beach volleyball, racing along the sands, etc. Alternately you can play water sports such as windsurfing, sailing, fishing, waterskiing, hiking, etc. In the year 2000, a golf course with 18 holes was opened in Doñana which is located in natural areas.

The night is very pleasant in this town because of the sea breeze. You can enjoy the entertainments, music and live events that are offered by various establishments.
