The Barri Gotic – A not-to-be missed area of Barcelona

The Barri Gotic is undoubtedly the heart of Barcelona. This oldest part of the Barcelona city is home to some of the best monuments and museums that the city has. There is a lot that can be seen and appreciated in the Barri Gotic.

You must start with Portal de l’Angel. Walking along the walkway from Plaza de Catalunya will be able to see a number of architectural wonders and capture them in your camera. The best time to take this walk would be evening as for rest of the day, the city remains busy. You can come here for an early evening walk and stroll past the restaurants and shops while taking delight in the architectural wonders on the way.

Touring the cathedral will also be important. In the exterior of the Sagrada Familia in L’Eixample district, is the cathedral and it happens to be the most important place of worship throughout Catalonia. In fact, the visit to Barcelona would be incomplete without visiting La Cathedral. The interior space and the kind of art work displayed is beyond definition but you must not also forget to see the lovely fountains and the garden.

Plaza de Sant Jaume should be the next in your itinerary. You’ll need to follow small streets that wind around the same cathedral in order to reach the plaza. The place features a number of Catalan government buildings. Some of these buildings are about 2000 years old. You must also visit plaza Calle Ferran.

From Southeast side of the Plaza de Sant Jaume you will find a boisterous pedestrian walkway which will take you to La Rambla that has a number of small shops that sell everything from including leather goods, designer dresses, FC Barcelona football jerseys, tarot cards etc.

Plaza Reial is also an important place to visit. You have to move leftwards from Plaza Calle Ferran, towards Calle d’en Arolas to reach the intimate Plaza Reial. Bars and restaurants are lined here with a number of outdoor tables making this a wonderful stop for afternoon lunch. You must note the lamps inside the plaza. These had been designed by Antoni Gaudi when he was young.

The Barri Gotic is a great tourist destination. Evening activities are at high in Barri Gotic but it is important that you beware and keep your valuables out of your back pocket. Do not carry too much cash as the area is quite crowded and make sure that you leave your passport where you are staying so that it remains safe.
