The town of Toledo in Spain

Toledo is rich in places of interest for a tourist. In fact Toledo is one of the most preferred places for visit among tourists. Let us go round this town and see for ourselves how interesting these places are:

Castillo de San Servando:

This castle is located near the famous river ‘Tagus’. The castle is believed to have been constructed during the medieval period. According to historians till the year 1088, this structure was a monastery. In the year 1091, the Christian army conquered the city. Thereafter the monastery was converted into a fortress. Great walls were built around it so as to protect the town from possible Moorish attack. After the end of Moorish civilization, the castle was deserted because thereafter the significance of the castle was lost. In the year 874, the Spanish government declared this monument as a national monument. This is a beautiful building which is meticulously planned and executed. If a tourist misses this building, he would certainly be missing something very interesting.

Palacio de Galiana:

If you want to visit something beautiful and different from the contemporary buildings, then never forget to visit Palacio de Galiana. This Moorish style palace is built on the banks of the river ‘Tagus’. Interestingly, the palace has many characteristics of the Andalusian time. The palace has been divided equally into three parts or into equal naves. The interior of the palace is beautifully decorated with great works of sculpture.

Another interesting fact about this palace is in its name. The name ‘Galiana’ is a fictitious name, representing the daughter of a Moorish King Aljafra which is another fictitious character. The beautiful botanical garden around this palace has enhanced the beauty of the palace. This garden is called AlMunya al Naura which means the Water Wheel Orchard. It is also called ‘King’s garden’. Some historians also believe that some type of water clock existed in this garden. The beauty of the garden was restored by the famous architect Palacio de Galiana who started the remodeling work in the year 1950.

Alcázar of Toledo:

This is actually a fortress which is believed to have been built in the 3rd century. This was located on the highest area of Toledo so that it could be used as an observatory to watch the movements of the enemies. The fortress has undergone many changes and remodeling. According to historical records, the fort was remodeled in the year 1535.
