Visiting Algeciras, Morocco

The port of Algeciras can be found near Gibraltar, in Morocco. It is one of the most important ports in Spain. A large number of workers from Morocco use it to travel to Belgium, Holland and France. Thanks to this, the city is strongly influenced by the Arabian culture; you will find lots of road signs written in Arabic and amazing Moroccan specialized services, such as their excellent mint and regular tea.

To be honest, this is not the most visually pleasing city that you can visit while on vacation, but it offers lots and lots of quality and inexpensive services. It has a unique and wonderful personality; it is one of those cities that will offer you an amazing time, a time that cannot be experienced elsewhere. The town features excellent restaurants, bars and other services. It also offers amazing views, nice parks and quality plazas.

The most visited section of Algeciras is its port where you can watch the daily ferry crossings to Morocco and Tangiers. This is also the appropriate place if you wish to go to Ronda via train. The road there will offer you some of the most amazing sights in the region of Andalucia, especially in Perblos Blancos and its vicinity.

Thanks to its location and being very near to the African continent, the town of Algeciras was the very first town ever to be captured by the Moors. In 1344 it was re-conquered by Alfonso XI of Castile, but he was unable to hold it. It was later destroyed in 1368 by the Moors and it took a few decades for it to be rebuilt again. In 1760 it was refounded by Spanish refugees. Due to these sad events, the town does not have the same old architecture and buildings as the other cities of Andalucia.

Despite all these tragic events, we can conclude that Algecirs is definitely a settlement with class. It was visited by many, world important rulers, such as queens, kings and statesmen like Winston Churchill or Franklin Roosevelt. The two statesmen mentioned stayed at the Reina Cristina Hotel. Even though today, such important people are far more likely to travel over the town, than stay or spend their vacation in it, we can honestly say that its tourist visiting rate is growing rapidly. And why wouldn’t it? The town features 23 kilometers of fine beaches. You can spend your vacation in San Garcia, Getares or Rinconcillo, all quality beaches that offer plenty of cheap and quality services.
