Visiting The Black Pyramids In Tenerife

A wonderful sightseeing spot

The Black Pyramids are situated just 26 kilometers away from the beautiful Santa Cruz city in Tenerife, in a place known as Guimar. In order to reach Guimar, you have to follow the TF-1 motorway and when you get to the 19 km point, follow the exit to Arafo. It is not difficult to reach the pyramids and they are open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., so there is nothing to stop you from visiting them.

The history of the pyramids

It was just in the 1990s that the Pyramids caught the attention of the public thanks to an article published in one of the popular local newspapers. The anthropologist Thor Heyerdahl studied them and says that they resemble the pyramids in Mexico, Peru, Mesopotamia or Polynesia.

It is not known for sure when the Pyramids were built, but the anthropologist believes that they were on that land prior to the appearance of the pre-Hispanic civilizations. 1991 was the year when Thor Heyerdahl ordered some excavations that showed the fact that there is a certain rule according to which the pyramids were built: they are aligned in such a way that they follow the summer and winter solstices.

Many cultures at one place

Specialists carried out excavations under the Pyramids known as the Pyramid 1. They found a cave measuring 8 meters in length where remains dating back to the Guanches helped to raise enthusiasm among the scientists. They found bodkins, goat bones, fish bones, stone objects and even necklaces. The Carbon-14 method dated the remains to a period between 680 and 1020 AD. When you finish visiting the pyramids, try not to miss the Exhibition Areas.

There are two such areas at your disposal where you have the chance to see ancient crafts such as the totora-papyrus boats.  Lots of temporary exhibitions containing photographs or objects are there to entertain the public and to teach history lessons, so make sure that you take advantage of these. The Pyramids are surrounded by breathtaking gardens that contain species of plants found only in the Canary Islands. If you go there with your children, do not worry about the fact that they will get bored of the history lessons; they have a playground at their disposal to use their energy. You should allocate some of your holiday time to visiting the Pyramids because I am sure that you will love them!
