A Fantastic Holiday In Ronda

If you are looking for Ronda, you will find it rising amid some of the darkest and steepest mountains in Spain. The dramatic natural beauty of the city is apparent as soon as you take your first step on its streets and see the beauty of the isolated sierra split by the spectacular river gorge known as El Tajo.

If you are looking for an even more spectacular sight, then direct your attention towards the bridge dating back to the 18th century which spans the gorge. The biggest attraction in Ronda is its breathtaking views contrasted against the green valleys of the Guadalevin River and by the cliffs of the Alameda Park.

Visiting Ronda

Ronda is split into three parts. You have the Mercadillo quarter which is the modern and cosmopolitan part of the city, the Ciudad which is the home of the Moorish quarter, the oldest part of the city, and the fascinating San Francisco suburb. The Ciudad resembles a huge maze. You should consider leaving behind your map of the city and just let yourself be guided by your instincts and try to discover the quarter on your own, step by step.

The Ciudad still has the original Moorish plan, but during the centuries some Renaissance mansions were built interspersed between the older houses. However, they do not detract from the Moorish air. Make sure you visit the Casa del Rey Moro and its famous Water Mine. The center of the quarter is home to the most beautiful and picturesque square in Ronda: the Duquesa de Parcent square.

The gates of Ronda are also Moorish, so you can expect to see something magnificent. Make sure to visit the Almocabar Gate which managed to survive the Christians conquest, especially if you are a person interested in and attracted to history. The Mercadillo developed during the time of the Christians and doesn’t have as many important monuments as the Ciudad.

Still, there are a few places here that you simply cannot miss and a few monuments, such as the Posada de Animas, dating back to the 16th century. The legend says this building hosted the famous Miguel Cervantes overnight. The Plaza de Toros is another big attraction of the Mercadillo, dating back to the 18th century, while the Plaza de Espana is the place where you should be if you want to enjoy the beautiful views of the town. Have fun!
