L’Estartit and the Medes islands, a paradise to diving amateurs

One thing that makes l’Estartit even more attractive is the archipelago of the 7 little islands called Medes, which, thanks to the beautiful ecosystem of fauna and flora, are known as the best nature reserve on the west coast of the Mediterranean Sea. This group of islands is just one sea mile from the mainland and it’s a paradise for diving lovers. The different depths make it possible to snorkel and dive in many different ways. If you go deeper, it will be darker, but you’ll still find more than 600 colourful plants and animals. There are many caves and tunnels that prove that this limestone islands were part of the Montgri mountain chain more than 10.000 years ago. Divers of all the levels, novices and experts, come here every year to enjoy the precious colours of the undersea life and to admire the caves. Nearby the Medes islands, you’ll find two shipwrecks, which also attract many divers around the world.

Playa Gran de l’Estartit, a big and large fine sand beach perfect to families with children

The biggest beach of l’Estartit, the Playa Gran, goes from the residential neighbourhood till the harbour. This beach is reachable by foot or by car and there are lots of places to park. This large and clear water beach is an exception on the Costa Brava and is very appropriate for families with young children. You’ll find also good touristic infrastructures and facilities as: skateboarding, bicycles to rent, tennis, horse riding, squash, karting, mountain bikes, beach volleyball, water ski, kayaks, canoes, promenades and a place to rent boats, for those divers who want to sail to the Medes islands from the yacht harbour. The impressive Montgrí highlands flows into the sea and forms a coast line of more than 10 km long with steep rocks and cliffs, picturesque bays and hidden caves, which are only reachable by boat. Above the mountains, you’ll discover Montgri’s castle from the 13th century. The ones that take the challenge of climbing this mountain will be awarded with historical monuments such as the Casa Salietti and the American’s house. You’ll also see walled farms, which were scared of pirate’s attacks.
