Sant Pere del Bosc: enjoy a romantic dinner in Lloret de Mar

Just 6 kms from Lloret de Mar, hidden in the middle of the pine trees, you will find the ancient monastery of Sant Pere del Bosc.

This modernist building, a jewel of Catalan architecture, has become a luxury hotel.

From medieval monastery to modernist joy: a little history…

The first traces of the building date back to the 10th century. At this time the monastery was occupied by Benedictine monks and called “Sant Pere Salou”. During the War of Succession at the end of the 17th century, the monastery was destroyed by the French and the monks left and moved to Girona.

In 1789, the renovation work began. The building changed its style for the first time : From Gothic it became Baroque. However it was only in the 19th century that it took the appearance that we see today.

In 1860, the chapel and the grounds which surrounded the monastery were purchased by an “Americano” Nicolas Font i Maig. The “Americanos” were the inhabitants of Lloret who had left to make their fortune across the Atlantic. After having made a fortune in Cuba, Font i Maig decided to return to his homeland. He then had the historical building renovated by the famous Catalan architect , friend of Antoni Gaudi, Puig i Cadafalch.

In 1904, a column overlooked by an angel was built next to the chapel.

Sant Pere del Bosc is therefore rather more than a medieval monastery! Through its architectural history you can discover the major events of Catalan history.
