Casa Sans: explore the historical side of Tossa de Mar

Visit
Casa Sans and get to know another aspect of the history of Tossa de Mar.

Built in the early twentieth century, it reflects the growing popularity of the town as a holiday resort. It also reminds us that Tossa was a source of inspiration for artists from Catalonia and around the world.

When modernism comes to Tossa …

The Casa Sans is a unique building in Tossa de Mar. It was built in 1906 by the architect Antoni de Falguera at the request of Joan Sans, who gave his name to the house.

From the outside you can admire the original facade decorated with modernist style gargoyles. These sculptures were inspired by the theme of the four seasons. In many ways, this house is reminiscent of Casa Vicens designed by Gaudi in Barcelona.

Originally, the painting that decorated the facade featured plant motifs as is customary in modernist art. Unfortunately, nothing remains of this decoration today…

Inside, you can admire the modernistcor, which still remains. The stained glass windows and the fireplace are particularly worth a look!

In the 1930, before the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, Tossa de Mar experienced a boom. It became a renowned holiday resort for well-off families and artists from around the world.

During this particular era, Casa Sanswas bought by the Vilallonga family. The family added new decorative elements to the house, including a statue of Diana the Huntress and the marble staircase that can still be admired today.
