Sant Miquel hospital: an historic ‘must see’ in Tossa de Mar

Sant Miquel used to be a hospital for the poor but has now been transformed into the cultural centre for Tossa de Mar.

A quick yet interesting visit you can make in Tossa de Mar which will take you back in time!

Meet Tossa’s most famous “Indiano”!

The hospital was founded in the eighteenth century by Tomás Vidal i Rey, one of Tossa de Mar’s “Indianos”. As in Lloret de Mar, the term “Indiano” is a reference to Spaniards who left the country to make their fortune in the Americas. Upon their return, they contributed to the wealth of their home town by commissioning lovely buildings and carrying out charitable works.

This was also the case for Tomas Vidal who, after having bought and renovated Tossa de Mar’s Medieval Can Leandro farm, dedicated a part of his fortune to the construction of this hospital. It was intended for the poor inhabitants of the city of Tossa.

From a hospital to a centre of culture

The architecture of Tossa de Mar’s Sant Miquel hospital is simple: it is a rectangular building made up of 2 floors with a central courtyard. Next door you will find the Sant Miquel chapel whose baroque altar is worth a visit.

The place is now home to Tossa’s centre of culture. It regularly organises cultural events and activities.
