Figueres is a province located at a distance of about 40 kms from Girona, and about 50 kms. from the Costa Brava airport, Figueres is frequented by travelers. Figueres is also highly accessible by land travel and high speed rail. Historians believe that Figueres’ origins can be traced back to about 1000 BC.

But the most reliable archeological explorations have found evidence going back even further to about the 8th Century. Like other places in Spain, Figueres has breath-taking natural scenery, churches, castles, museums and many other places of interest.

The Castle de Sant Ferran is one of the important places to visit. It is believed that this castle was built in 18th Century to defend the place from French invaders.  However, history says that the French captured the place. The castle has a parade ground and a prison believed to have been used during Napoleonic rule. This castle is believed to be the most extensive fortress ever built in Europe.

Saint Peter’s cathedral is another important place to visit. It is said that this cathedral was built in 1904. It is believed to have been built over the remnants of a parish church built in the 11th century. The most imposing church is of Gothic style in its design. This is one of the most popular churches in the region.

The Museum of Dali is another place which should never be missed by anyone. In fact those who love art should make it a point to visit this great building. This museum is the brain child of the great painter, Salvador Dali. He conceived the idea of this museum and rebuilt it when the original building was damaged in a fire.

All the works of Dali, his paintings, sculptures, personal jewelry, and other memorabilia are on display here. In fact Dali’s grave is located in this museum. The most impressive work is the 3D representation of his best known works. Be prepared to spend the entire day when you visit this museum.

Saint Pere Church is another place worth seeing. This Gothic-style church is believed to have been built over an existing church. The church is surrounded by many other buildings built in the Gothic style.
