Plasencia and Its Surroundings

A unique country

Spain: an amazing country that attracts tourists with its unique architectural style, its breathtaking landscapes, its well preserved customs and traditions, the passionate flamenco dancers and the bullfights full of adrenaline.
Plasencia

One of the most beautiful places in Spain is Plasencia. Plasencia is a spectacular city situated on top of a reddish hill; it represents the departure point in exploring the Jerte Valley (Valle del Jerte). It is also the departure point for exploring the Valle de la Vera, the rustic place where the monastery that hosted Carlos the Vth lies.

He wanted to live the last years of his life in this idyllic, quite place, as the burden of being the Emperor of the Roman Empire had exhausted him.

The main attraction in Plasencia is the Cathedral. Just like the one in Salamanca, it combines two architectural styles: the old cathedral, dating back to the XIVth century, was built following the Gothic style. The new Cathedral was finished at the end of the XVIth century in a Renaissance style. The cathedral is known as the most decorated building in the region.

When in front of it, be sure to admire the San Pablo tower, the northern Plateresque portal and the sculptures on the main altar. Once you are finished with the cathedral, go to Plaza Mayor. Imposing manors border the streets around the square, where every Tuesday you’ll find a rich market; it has been held every Tuesday since the Middle Ages.

While you are still in Plasencia, go to the Del Dean House, the Episcopal Palace, the Casa de las Dos Torres and the Ethnografic Museum.

Valle del Jerte is full of oaks, but it is famous for its cherry trees; more than thirty types of cherries can delight your senses. If you are on holiday in May, visit the Valdastillas village: you will have a chance to experience the family traditions in the area. The families pick and sort the cherries and the tourists can go on a trip to the numerous factories that transform the cherries into liqueur.

Accommodation

Plasencia is a very picturesque region of Spain. Very rural and rustic but charming, the area attracts thousands of tourists every year. If you wish to be one of them and if you want to feel the spirit of the place, choose villas for your accommodation. They will impress you with their style of decoration and by the fact that they are extremely comfortable.
