The Historic Town Of Santo Domingo de La Calzada

Santo Domingo de la Calzada is a small town in La Rioja where you can get lost in the old part of town, a place where cars do not have access to avoid deterioration of the city’s artistic heritage. This is the best place to enjoy a medieval world untouched by modernity. The city is located on the route of Camino de Santiago which pilgrims have walked for centuries.

The city took its name from St. Dominic himself, who aspired to undertake his monastic life at the Monastery of San Millán, half an hour away, but was ultimately rejected. In fact, the Parador Nacional de Santo Domingo de la Calzada was an old pilgrim’s hospital, founded by St. Dominic himself. The work of the hospital in the city contributed to its prosperity, and so everyone who is able should try to visit the Parador de Santo Domingo de la Calzada.

The Parador de Santo Domingo de la Calzada is spectacular and sumptuous. You would hardly believe that it was formerly a hospital for pilgrims who came here to heal their illnesses or purify their souls before they reached the foot of the Apostle in Santiago. Upon entering it, you will find a large lounge for guests or for those who wish to go to the bar or restaurant to enjoy the food or drink. Since the hostel is located in the historic pedestrian center, cars are not allowed except for a fifteen-minute stop in front of the Parador. However, the Parador has parking,

which you should book when you make your own room reservations as parking places are limited. The rooms are spacious and elegant, and the restaurant serves delicious food. It is an advantage that the Parador is in the center of town because you can walk and eat at any place nearby. For example, on the other side of the plaza is a restaurant, The Knights, which serves local dishes. Rioja stew is one of the delicacies of the house.

Near the hostel there are many small bars and cafes for breakfast or tapas. In addition, Santo Domingo de la Calzada is a city that has a reputation for great pastries. In any bakery you can find sweets for a good price. And if you take a trip around the area, a half hour away is the beautiful Monastery of San Millán de la Cogolla, birthplace of the Spanish language, which you must visit before you leave the hostel. It has two monasteries and fabulous views.
