Visit The Amazing Antequera

Andalusia is truly one of the most beautiful regions in Spain, a region that has a lot to offer its tourists. However, the true potential of Andalusia is a lot bigger than what tourism brochures show, because there are hundreds of places which are not very famous. These places hide treasures of beauty, culture, traditions, and history and they should receive more attention from you, the tourist, because they really deserve it.

One of these hidden treasures in the small town of Antequera, a place which began to become popular among tourists when the real estates started to be of great interest for those who invest in such things. Investors started to buy properties around Antequera because they saw its potential and its beauty. It is especially the British who buy houses in Antequera, because they are attracted by the amazing climate and by the history of the town, which is charming.

The history of a wonderful place

The British are definitely not the ones who first discovered the potential of Antequera. The first people who did it were among the first inhabitants of Spain and especially of Andalusia, over 5,000 years ago. The area which was watered by the Guadalhorce River was a very fertile one, situated at the feet of the Sierra Torcales Mountains. The fingerprints of these people are two imposing burial monuments made of stone, weighing more than 180 tons, which were only discovered in the 17th century.

The Roman Empire transformed Antequera in a very important center for the production of the olive oil; for those who are interested in all the details of the town’s history, the Antequera Museum hosts collections of objects pertaining to even the first days of life for the settlement. The history of many Spanish towns and cities is closely connected to both the Romans and the Moors; this is also the case of Antequera.

The Moors were the ones who left behind the amazing castle which still guards the town’s streets and some of the oldest houses, built during the Moors, contain tunnels that can still be visited by tourists. You can find these in the old quarter. The center of the town is dedicated to entertainment; many lively bars and pubs which serve the famous tapas are everywhere. If you need some peace and quiet, follow the narrow, white streets which will lead you to the old quarter.
