Where to go for a coffee, hot cholocate or horchata in Lloret de Mar

In addition to its culinary specialities, Spain also has some speciality drinks. It is very common to see people enjoying a coffee break at a bar or an outside café terrace.

Make the most of your holidays in Lloret de Mar to get in tune with Iberian life and discover some new flavours. Here is our selection of good places to go in town for a coffee break.

Types of Spanish coffee and hot chocolate

There is a wide variety of coffee in Spain, but note that it is most often served with milk. If you want an expresso, remember to ask for a “café solo” – in other words with nothing! Among the variations are the “cortado” (or “tallat” in Catalan), coffee with a little drop of milk. If you prefer weaker coffee, you will need to ask for a “café Americano”. Some places like the PdePaBakery serve original coffees like coffee with hazelnut milk.

To navigate your way around all these coffees, we recommend reading up on the subject.

When it comes to hot chocolate, it is usually enjoyed as an afternoon treat. Another Catalan speciality is Cacaolat, a cold chocolate drink that is especially popular with younger children.

Horchata and leche merengada

Horchata is a drink from Valencia made with “chufa” grains. Served cold, you will find it in several cafés or in specialist establishments called “horchaterias”. As for the “leche merengada” (meringue milk), it is also served cold and is made from milk, whipped egg whites, cinnamon and citrus fruit.

Note that these drinks can also be bought bottled at most Spanish supermarkets. But there’s nothing like the real homemade horchata or leche merengada.

Horchateria y Heladeria la Jijonenca

This establishment can be found on Paseo de Mar, near Lloret castle. You will find a wide selection of “helados” (ice creams in Spanish) and above all an excellent house horchata. Their iced lemon is also famous. It is the perfect place if you want to try one of these typically Spanish refreshments! Note that you can also order these drinks to go and bring them home with you!
