The lighthouse of Tossa de Mar

At a time when lighthouses have lost their former melancholic charm, rediscover the history of these guardians of the sea!

An original trip to do during your holiday in Tossa de Mar which will throw you straight into the maritime past of the town and the Mediterranean.

Towards the lighthouse….

The Far de Tossa (Tossa lighthouse in English) dominates the old town from upon the highest hill. It is situated in the very place where the Medieval castle once stood.

It was built in 1917 to replace the rudimentary light signals that were used both as a guide and an alert. Its presence was even more necessary because of the fact that the Costa Brava is a rocky and sometimes treacherous coast, often interspersed with dangerous reefs.

Today you will find the Centre d’Interpretació dels Fars de la Mediterrània here, a museum that recounts the evolution of the lighthouses of the Mediterranean sea.
