Girona- The Charming City

All About Girona

Girona is a very old city, but it’s very charming too. Passing through a period of prosperity and having a strategic placement, Girona was transformed into an ideal place to start exploring the region in which it is sitauted: Catalonia.

Girona is sometimes compared to Barcelona; some even call it the ”mini Barcelona”. The city even owns an equivalent of Antoni Gaudi in the person of Rafael Maso, the architect of the city who mostly designed buldings following the ”modernista” style; buildings that can be admired in the center of the town.

The Iberians have built Girona as a military fortress located at the confluence of the Ter and Onyar rivers. Romans, Arabs and even Jews have left their fingerprints upon this wonderful city in Spain, and Carol’s army is not the only one that besieged the city.

Two Parts of The City

The Onyar river clearly separates the medieval part of the city from the one built in the XIXth and the XXth centuries. The numeorus bridges that cross the river offer the tourist the possibility to admire the colors of the old houses with flowered balconies.

One of the best viewpoints in town is the Pont de Peixateries Velles, built in 1877 by Gustav Eiffel’s company. From here go to the central point of Girona, Rambla de la Llibertat, where every Saturday you can admire the flower market and relax at one of the coffee shops.

This central point has a road that will take the tourist right in the heart of the medieval Girona. Here tourists can visit the Roman walls and the highest point in the city, the medieval Torre Gironella. Torre Gironella is the perfect viewpoint for panoramic views. While here, you can also take a walk on the ramparts.

Sightseeing in Girona

Girona offers a great number of sightseeing places that are worth visiting. The Banys Arabs, or the Arab baths, will impress you with their Moorish architecture. The Gothic Sant Feliu Church is also a place that should be on your sightseeing list.

From the church, go to Museo Arqueologico de Sant Pere de Galligants, a museum that praises the Spanish architecture, this unique architecture that impresses every eye that has the joy to see it.

Does this sound interesting? This holiday destination will definetely turn into one of the most beautiful experiences you have ever had. Don’t miss it!!
