Visit Guernica – Place of the Oak – Spain

Everywhere you visit in the world has a history behind it, whether it is Greece, Rome or even South Africa! This small town of the Basque province, Guernica is no exception. Guernica is actually the name of a particular species of Oak tree.

It was under this tree that the ancient people of this province held meetings, took decisions and wrote laws. Gradually the city took the name of the Oak tree and came to be called Guernica. In fact during the 2nd World War, Guernica bore the brunt of the bombing and this had a devastating effect on this tiny city. It is now one of the important places to visit in Spain.

Casa de Juntas: This is the parliament building which was built very close to the original Guernica     Oak tree. It is interesting to note that during the 2nd World War, this building somehow survived     the German bombing. Now it is a museum and is a testament to the history of the survival of the     Basque  people.

Church Iglesias Santa Maria: This 15th Century church has always been the centre of attraction for all visitors. The church is built in typical Gothic style.

Cave de Santimamine: Some people call Guernica a treasure of Spain. Perhaps they made this statement after visiting the cave ‘de Santimamine’. Unbelievably this beautiful cave contains paintings said to date back to 10000-15000 BC! It is located just 4 kilometers from Guernica. The cave was only discovered in 1917. The government has taken several measures to save this precious site.

Park de los Pueblos de Europa: This most famous park has many plants which are of medicinal value. Apart from the picturesque beauty of the park, it also has many sculptures from renowned sculptors, including some by Henry Moore and Chllida. The park is the ideal place in which to relax in the middle of the beauty of nature.

Museum for Sports Activity: ‘Fronton’ is a popular game in Guernica. A museum has been built where this game is played every Saturday to Monday. Many people meet up to play Fronton. The museum has information on the history of Fronton.
